Minor League Monday: Week 8 of MiLB

Week 8 saw some interesting developments down on the farm. Here's Cubs minor league action for the week.


Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs split their series vs Omaha. Overall, they are now at 17-28. As for individual players of note:

• Nick Martini had a two home run week.

• Nico Hoerner began his rehab assignment as he tries to get back to the majors.

• Trevor Williams had a 2 inning rehab start, 0 ER

• Cory Abbott had a 5 inning 3 ER quality start.


Tennessee Smokies

The AA Smokies are 16-30 on the season, after going 2-4 in Mississippi. For individual players:

• Nelson Maldonado had a hot week, with 8 hits in 22 AB.

• Brennan Davis is at a .693 OPS. Not a lot of pop or batting average, but a very healthy .360 OBP.

• Luis Lugo had a nice week. One start and one relief appearance. 8.1 IP, 0 ER. He was the winner in the only Smokie wins.


Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The low A Pelicans spit their series in Columbia. They are 21-26 now. As for some of the player highlights:

• Ryan Reynold had a nice .907 OPS for the week.

• Manuel Espinoza bounced back with a 5 shutout inning start.

• DJ Herz also bounced back nicely with 5 no hit innings.


South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs A+ are now 20-27, after going 2-4 vs Fort Wayne. As for some of the player highlights:

• Nelson Velazquez had a two homer week.

• Delvin Zinn is up to 30 steals, 2 caught stealing. He tied his career high.

• Max Bain had 6 no hit innings.


Play of the week:


Ed Howard hit his first professional homer in dramatic fashion.
